Biography:
Robert Prothero Hankinson was born 8 December 1980, the eldest son of Robert Scott Hankinson (G 1871-1875) of Little Basset Wood, Southampton, and of Chelsea Park Gardens, London. His mother was Emma Hankinson, daughter of the Reverend Canon George Prothero.
Robert came to Winchester College from West Downs School in September 1904 - he was a Scholar. He won the Warden and Fellows Prize for Greek Prose, played in College XV and was a prefect in his last year. In 1909 he was awarded a Scholarship to New College, Oxford and left Winchester for Oxford in the summer of 1909.
At Oxford, Hankinson gained a First in Classical Moderations. In 1913 he rowed No. 3 in the University VIII which beat Cambridge. He gained a Second in History, and joined the Indian Civil Service in 1914.
On the outbreak of War Hankinson was ordered to India where he served as an Assistant Magistrate and Collector. In August 1915 he was transferred to the Corps of Guides and was sent to Mesopotamia with the 56th Punjabi Rifles. It was during an action near Kut that Hankinson died of wounds received on 23 February 1917.
He was buried in grave XXI.C.15 of the Amara War Cemetery.
