Hunt, John Henry Sneyd Carew

2nd Lieutenant / London Regiment

1875 - 1916
Biography:

John Henry Sneyd Carew Hunt was born 24 November 1875, the son of Robert Ponsonby Carew Hunt (Commoner 1858) and Ada, daughter of the Reverend John Sneyd.

He came to Winchester College from Ascham House, Bournemouth in September 1888 and was in E House, Morshead's. He played in Lords XI in 1893 and left Wichester in the summer of that year.

In 1895, he was appointed a clerk in the Probate and Divorce Registry, Somerset House. He took a prominent part in first-class cricket, playing for Middlesex from 1902 to 1905 and for the Gentlemen in 1904 and 1905. His obituary in Wisden in 1917 recorded that 'He was a very good all-round cricketer, and so keen and enthusiastic that he was more valuable on a side than many players of greater natural gifts. He was a very plucky punishing bat, a useful bowler, right-hand fast, and a brilliant fieldsman, wherever he was placed'.

On the outbreak of war, John enlisted as a Private in the 15th Battalion County of London Regiment and subsequently obtained a commission in the 23rd Battalion. He fell on 16 September 1916, aged 42, during the costly but ultimately successful capture of High Wood. His place of burial is unknown and John is instead commemorated on the Thievpal Memorial.
