Biography:

Arthur Frederic Skaife was born 24 August 1883, the eldest son of Frederic and Josephine Skaife of North Street House, Chichester.

He came to Winchester in September 1886 from Mr S Johnston's School at Leatherhead and was in B House, Moberly's - his brother  Eric Ommanney Skaife joined him in 1897.

Arthur left Winchester in the summer of 1901 for RMC Sandhurst, obtaining a commission in 1902 in the 1st Battalion Middlesex Regiment. His regiment was ordered to France on the outbreak of the war and Arthur was killed by a sniper on 1st November 1914 at La Boutillerie, near Armentieres, during the First Battle of Ypres.

He is commemorated by Abbey Wall Memorial 12 of the Rue-David Military Cemetery, Fleubaix. These special memorials commemorate casualties buried in Abbey Wall Cemetery whose graves were subsequently destroyed by shell-fire.
